If pasta is a vegetable, milk is meat. Pasta is made from grain - the seeds, not leaves or stalk. That is right. Not from leaves, stem or roots.
BTW I'd like to know if being precise and accurate about things (as described in written works) is now the same as "being anal"?
IMO there seems to be confusion in the minds of people who can't, or won't make the difference between a vegetable (a plant), and the vegetable material or matter (neither animal nor mineral). Typically, and as described in books, a vegetable is an edible plant (lettuce, carrot, radish, parsnip...) or herb (parsley, basil, thyme...) that can be eaten raw or cooked, and isn't sweet or doesn't taste sweet like a fruit.
RE the notion of "comfort" food / junk food, guilty pleasure and the psychological effects of junk food on individuals is another matter.

dentarthurdent - or, if pasta is a vegetable then ice cream is milk, @lamaton I think it is obvious. If you can ask a 6 year old what it is and they can answer then it works. Ask a 6 year old is pasta a vegetable and they, hopefully, will laugh and say "no, silly, pasta is not a vegetable." If they say "yes", they are either dumb or awkward and their life is going to be full of pain and disappointment. I should know I am one of those awkward b's who thinks every question is a challenge. I think some people would have always described people being accurate as being anal, so it depends on how reasonable the need for accuracy is, or alternatively, how awkward the objection is. Though, I think there are a few other pejoratives thrown around for those who block and call agents anyone making a joke / error while letting themselves off with sloppiness.

The expectation with the 6 year old might be a tad optimistic though, in this age of idio-corpo-cracy and media-mediocrity. I heard from a mother that her son assumed that sea fish were like fish fingers on his plate. If so-called adults start telling kids that pasta is a vegetable, they might believe spaghetti grows in soil too.

Indeed, I was pretty dumb at 6, some may say some things never change. I think we all know it is the fruit of the spaghetti tree, so please no misdirection here.
