I watched an interesting video today where a Jewish guy drinking from a purple cup (wink wink) claimed that Europeans never drank water because rivers and lakes were polluted with bacteria, so they drank beer and wine all their lives, every day. And became alcoholics from childhood. The Pilgrims brought beer in the Mayflower instead of drinking water, and got the DTs when they ran out. No one ever heard of boiling water to purify it. He went on to speculate that the Salem witch trials were maybe a result of hallucinations from alcohol withdrawal. Ha ha. Then he said tea came along as an alternative to booze, which was a huge cultural improvement and suggests why tea was such an important thing in Colonial times. It sounded pretty extreme. He did mention the Dutch inventing gin, then taxing the hell out of it. www.youtube.com/live/oZsROO1rDS8?si=tle_pIeWGhLwC26M

I don't know how true it is, but for years, when someone comments on my alcohol consumption, I say, "You think I drink a lot?You should have seen how much my ancestors drank."
