For some reason, this insipid song popped into my head. “I’m an honest man from where the palm trees grow… “
Wikipedia attributes the lyrics to 19th century Cuban independence advocate Jose Marti, put to music decades later by a Cuban musician. Also that it was popularized in the US by Pete Seeger in the Cuban Missile Crisis era. So, CIA propaganda, whitewashing the poor downtrodden Cubans who just wanted to stick it to the man, so support Castro or you’re capitalist pig who hates simple honest peasants. Miles already showed that Fidel was a fake, of course. Nope, Cubans are like the rest of us. Corrupt, corruptible, gullible, human beings; we’re all the same.
As for Marti, I suspect he was a fake, too. Wiki has a long article about his exploits and world travel, but nothing about how he paid for that lifestyle. Born rich, I guess. An honest man from the land of palm trees, gallivanting around the world on someone else’s dime to spout revolutionary propaganda. Spain kicked him out of Cuba and sent him to…. …Spain, where he went to law school, as you naturally would with no visible means of support in a foreign land hostile to your views.
Then, Marti died in “battle,” described by Wiki as Marti and a messenger boy charging into the Spanish army. So, a faked death. Not quite the Teddy Roosevelt fake adventure, but martyrdom has its uses. Sigh.
