I gave Merrill a bit of time to respond but he or she has not, in the interest of not derailing that thread I'd like to analyze his statement a bit.

He states that lol has proven nothing. This appears to be an opinion, proof is something we evaluate for ourselves so I may consider something was proven. He is welcome to state his opinion.
"you troll" is now a personal attack and characterizsation of lol's participation on the forum. It doesn't rise above opinion, its merely namecalling at this point. No evidence of trolling is presented, its just stated that he is a troll as an unsupported opinion.
This for me seems to break basic civility. For instance I or anyone can now just turn around and call Merrill the troll? Is that a level of discussion that holds any value to us? Who can even pin down a definiton of "troll" anyway? It for me is basically a slippery word that can be used to describe any number of human behaviors. Acting with intention to disrupt, is about the most concise I can get with it.
"links to liars" implies at least two links went to people who were lying. So what? Are we to guess which 2 he is referring to, this is another opinion just stated. Its too vague to even interpret, it could be just 2 that are lying or all of them. I find it basic disinterest in actual discussion that Merrill wouldn't even point to one clear example. Daniel Archer did just that, he posted a link and said he wonders if it was faked. I watched the video, of course it contains some fakery. I use the example of the bugle player depicted. Are we being led to believe that was an actual japanese bugle player transmitting the actual attack signal there on Iwo Jima at that moment? I don't see the significance that it could just be some filler stock footage of a bugler. Think of the reality of having a camera man in a warzone capturing actual events as they occur, these people were living on stored food and water there are limitations to the amount of evidence they can produce for future generations.
Lastly, the video listed by Archer printed sources in what appear to be book form. Nice. If there is an underlying lie about the narrative presented concering iwo jima, it is likely there. And those books concieveably reference more primary documents to form their narrative. The lie could be embedded there as wel,l like a badly faked photo released by military authority. To assume the video can be falsified and the narrative is thus falsified is a flaw of logic and exceeding shallow.
Archer, I would love for you to clarify basic civility in this case of namecalling. Is Merrill still honoring that? If yes, where can I assume the line is when basic civility is violated. Merrill is commenting as a guest, I feel like he has risked very little to come here and throw mud, is this the sort of thing we will tolerate for now, or will we tolerate it even as this forum picks up in activity in the future? If a comment violates basic civility in the future, what happens? A person can always just pick a new guest user name and continue even if a user name is banned. What sanction is appropriate?
