Harold Joseph Jeghers was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on September 26, 1904. The family moved to upstate New York, where his father was an owner of several different businesses in the communities of Saugeties and Rosendale.

While at University Hospitals, Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Jeghers was assigned as a clinical clerk to Thomas Spies, M.D. a Fellow in Medicine. Dr. Spies was then actively engaged in unraveling the mystery of pellagra.

Dr. Jeghers was accepted to the Boston University Medical Service at Boston City Hospital for an eighteen month internship.

Dr. John Foley, Boston City Hospital, encouraged Dr. Jeghers to complete a one year research fellowship at the Evans Memorial Institute for Clinical Research which was affiliated with Boston University.

He labored with unremitting zeal to put thiamine, nicotinic acid, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B12 and thymine (5-methyl uracil)[3] to use in clinical and preventive medicine.

His parents separated when he was a year old, and he did not see his famous father for many years. In 1957, his mother married another broadcast journalist, Bill Leonard, who worked as a floor reporter at the 1952, 1956, and 1960 political conventions and later became president of CBS News, from 1979 until 1982. “My stepfather was the single most important person in my life,” Wallace says. For one thing, Leonard was deeply involved in political journalism: he served on the CBS Reports team, was executive producer of the network’s election coverage, and helped develop exit polling.

Fourth Liberty Loan Appeal

The Liberty Loan Committee of Greeley county has been order to ascertain the wealth of Greeley County in order that the burdens of financing the war be equalized amongst individuals and that a permanent record be made and kept, of the worth of every man in the County, the number of bonds he owns, the number of War Saving Stamps and the total amount of his subscriptions to all war activities.
Pursuant to the above order it will be necessary at the various meetings in the county for every man to sign up the following card: Information sought by the government to assist in financing and supporting war needs.

This notice is given before the meeting so that every man in the county will have ample time to figure out his net worth, the bonds and War Saving Stamps he owns, and his contributions to the various war activities, so when he comes to the meeting in his precinct, he will be ready lo fill out his card without delay. The total net worth of each precinct will be totaled from the above card and a sufficiënt per cent of the net worth of tho precinct to make the quota of each precinct will levied.

In view of the fact that prudent men deem it a privilege to own Liberty Bonds, those wishing to buy more tban their percent can do so, but no man under this plan can buy less than bis percent.
The following are the various rules and conditions adopted by the Liberty Loan Committee in conducting the various meetings

1. Every man in Greeley county is directed to attend the meeting in his precinct.

2. Every man is directed to figure out his net worth, the Bonds he owns, War Saving stamps and his donations to the Red Cross, Y. M. C. A., K. of C, and others before he comes to the meeting,

3 The value of all real and personal property shall be determined by each individual on the basis of its market value.

(4?) Every man shall sign a card containing the information asked for on the card, as set out in direction number two, truthfully,

5. School shall be adjourned in every school house in every precinct on the day, on which the Liberty Loan meeting is to be held by order of me County superintendent.

6. The precinct chairman will preside at the meeting in his precinct and together with clerks shall tabulate net worth of the net worth of the precinct when the cards are filled out and ascertain the percent which each individual shall buy sufficient to make the quota of the precinct. When men refuse to sign the card his name will be noted by the precinct chairman and he will oe classed as a slacker. The precinct chairman shall endeavor to notify every man in his precinct by card or otherwise. but in case a man is not notified by card or otherwise, by the precinct chairman, he is expected to be at the meeting, his name might have been overlooked.

7. Bonds draw 4 1/4 percent and can be purchased on the installment plan.

8. Each precinct has also a woman chairman, who will conduct the campaign on the part of the women in the couuty, as all women who are earning $50 per month or over, and all women who have seperate property of their own are expected to buy Liberty Bonds.

9. The twelve out-lying precincts shall meet on October 8, at 2 o'clock p m , at a school house designated by their chairman and the meeting in the Spring Creek precinct shall be held at Wolbach October 9th. at 9 oclock a. m; Scotia, October 10th, at 9 o'clock a. m.; Spalding. October 12th. at 9 o’clock a. m , and Greeley, October 12th, at 9 o’clock a. m. All business places shall be closed during the meeting.

10. Every man should help and assist his neighbor to getting to the meeting.

Our quota is large being $588.250 and it must be raised. The quota for Spring Creek is $56,624.

There is fairness in patriotism as well as in business and every man who wants to see fairplay in regard to assuming the burdens of the war should get behind this Fourth Liberty Loan and see to it that this system has the support of all the people.

If the 345 boys of Greeley County go over the top and make the supreme sacrifice, we can go over the top by making the best investment in the world and loan the government money with which to feed, arm, cloth and care for our boys. Remember men cannot fight on an empty stomach with tattered clothes aud defective weapons, and if we fail, they fail, as we are the army behind the army. Remember the government intends we shall live, but it also intends that we shall invest our profit in government bonds to help conduct this war.
